Ladies Section
Ladies at Handsworth are an integral part of the club; although few, they are a progressive, enthusiastic and growing section. Whether you are a low handicapper, a beginner, a junior or a senior, you are assured a warm welcome at Handsworth.
As a forward-thinking golf club, Handsworth recognises how vital the working lady golfer is to a club and holds several of the ladies’ major trophy competitions on a Sunday. Ladies are welcome to play in the men’s non-trophy competitions on a Saturday.
Playing with reserved ladies’ times on the first tee, regular competitions, and social golf form the backbone of the section, and there is always a team to play in. Our scratch team will attract the lower handicappers whilst the mid to high handicappers will be welcome in our friendly teams.
But not all golf is serious! There are several away days, invitation days and open competitions where everyone can join in and enjoy the game, plus lots of opportunities to have a relaxed social round followed by a nourishing treat from the bar!
Mixed golf plays an integral part in the overall sociability of the golf offering at Handsworth, and the ladies section is very much the driver of this activity. The club runs a thriving calendar of mixed matches and hosts several mixed opens throughout the year.
Don’t worry if you don’t have a partner; we’ll find you one!! Our professional Lee Bashford runs ladies-only group lessons and individual private lessons if you are new to golf. There will always be an encouraging word of support from the ladies that remember when they decided to try this weird but wonderful game for the first time.

Mens Section
Handsworth is a golfer’s golf club steeped in tradition but with a very inclusive attitude to new members. The competition calendar is extensive and meets all needs with regular competitions at weekends and during the week. The weekend competitions are entered by starting sheet with more than 150 members taking part, but many of the midweek competitions are “turn up and play”.
The club boasts many successes, not least in team competitions. For elite golfers, our scratch team play in Midlands Division 1 and are the current holders of The Warwickshire Cup. For the 4- 15 handicappers, there is the West Midlands League Team, where pairs comprise a “low man off less than 10 but more than 4” and “high man of more than 10 but less than 15” played in zones to start. Handsworth regularly makes it through to the knockout stages and are past winners of the Davenport Salver League Cup competition.
There are then the “A”, and “B” teams that cater for the competitive/social golfer. Both teams have strong fixture lists against other local clubs, and competition for places is stiff.
In addition to team and competition, golf Handsworth has several social golf groups that always welcome members to join them if you’re stuck for a game. We have several members who play representative golf for the county, and one of our members is the current “Champion of Champions”.

“I’ve felt more welcome in my first week at Handsworth than I did in 10 years at my previous club” is a comment overheard on our balcony and is a fitting way to summarise Handsworth Golf Club.

Seniors Section
As with most golf clubs, Handsworth Seniors Section is very active and an essential part of the club.
With more than 60 members and open to anyone aged 55 and over, a full diary of team matches is supplemented by regular weekday competitions. There are also away days, several senior opens and numerous social golfing groups that play throughout the week.

Juniors Section
Juniors at Handsworth are an important part of the club’s future, and although a small section at the moment, we have plans to encourage its development over the next few years.
Although small, we have had many successes with members playing for the Staffordshire Age Group sides. One of our junior girls recently won the Staffordshire Girls (Nett) Championship, and one of our former junior members has recently turned professional.
Our plans include recognition under the new England Golf “Golfmark” scheme. This will include scheduled golf tuition, and full use of the club’s practice facilities and will require our scholars to commit to improving the standard of their golf, playing for the club’s junior team and other club teams as required.
We currently have one junior playing in our senior scratch team and one playing in our West Midlands League team, but we would expect our scholarship programme to accelerate this involvement.
