Members at Handsworth Golf Club have had a very successful year so far in raising money for this year’s chosen Captain’s Charity and, in turn, helping local teenager Dylan.
Dylan is pictured above at the Captain’s Charity Day in a Powered Wheel Chair similar to the one being built for him, along with his Mum Samantha and Dad Gareth. Also in the photo is Handsworth Golf Club Vice President Keith Rigby (left) and also Eric Malkin (right) from the Peter Alliss Masters Charity.
Men’s Captain David Horniblow and Ladies Captain Margaret Doherty chose the Peter Alliss Masters Charity as their chosen Charity for 2022, an organisation that helps children who are born with disabilities that affect their mobility. The Charity identifies a local child who suffers from a mobility disability that would benefit greatly from the donation of a personally fitted powered wheelchair and work in conjunction with the Golf Club to make it happen.
Recently over a hundred members from Handsworth Golf Club played in the ‘Captains Charity Day’ and made donations to the worthy cause. £6000 was raised on the day of the event, taking the total raised so far this year to over £9000.
Attending the presentation on the day was 13-year-old Dylan, accompanied by his parents, Sam and Gareth. Dylan suffers from mobility disabilities, including Muscular Dystrophy and Autism, and a powered wheelchair specifically tailored to his needs is currently being built for him.
Dylan showed off what the new chair would mean to him in the clubhouse whilst using a similarly powered chair brought to the presentation by the Peter Alliss Masters Charity to show golfers what their efforts are buying.
Men’s Captain David Horniblow said,
“The members have made a great effort so far in raising money for Dylan’s Powered Wheelchair. When we chose the Charity at the start of my year, we wanted to ensure that the money raised over our captaincy period helped one local person who needed it most. Hopefully, Dylan and his family will benefit greatly when he receives his prescription-powered wheelchair and give him the independence that all teenagers deserve. We are making a final push to try and get to the £11,000 needed to fully fund his chair, with the Peter Alliss Masters Charity willing to meet any shortfall but hopefully, there won’t be one.”
Dylan’s mum Samantha said: “Dylan is now a teenager and is growing up fast. The new powered wheelchair will bring him much-needed independence and will make a world of difference to his life and ours as a family.
Dylan’s dad, Gareth, added,” As a family, we would like to thank Captains David and Margaret and all the golfers from Handsworth Golf Club who have kindly donated to the cause over the year. It was great to meet some of you at the Captains Charity day, and as a family, we really appreciate your generosity in helping Dylan. We really can’t thank you all enough.”
Sadly on Captains Charity Day, David Horniblow wasn’t able to meet Dylan as he had tested positive for Covid, so Vice President Keith Rigby stepped in.
