Thursday 3rd November saw 118 players compete in the Senior Pairs Open. The event was in doubt following 15 millimetres of rain during the night, but the course was playable and relatively dry, with the greens true and quick.
The event was a pairs better ball competition off 85% course handicap. Due to some interesting pin positions, scoring was difficult as the course proved challenging to the majority of players.
The winning pair with 45 points were R Johnson and E Ellarn from Harborne Golf Club.
Captain Dave Horniblow with the winners R Johnson & E Ellarn, who also happened to be his playing partners on the day.
There was also a competition for the super seniors, with the pair needing a combined age of 140. This was won by Roy Brown and Frank Burns (Handsworth) with an excellent 41 points.
B Bannister had the nearest the pin on the 6th, and yes, he did make the putt to get into the twos!
A special note must go to John Nichols, who managed to acquire three twos which meant he has now been able to restock his golf bag with shiny new Srixons.
Following the prize presentation, the Captain gave special thanks to Dave Edwards for organising the event, Alf Tanner for his assistance on the signing-in desk and Lee Bashford for checking the cards. He then thanked the girls for keeping us well watered – Mel, Reece and Jodie.
While waiting for the results, everyone was served a one-course meal with the options of curry, chilli or meatballs or a combination of all 3. The Captain gave thanks to John and his team for an excellent spread.
Finally, everyone was reminded that the event would be repeated next year on Thursday 2nd of November. We look forward to seeing you all then.
